In 1954, a group of wealthy individuals including Harvey Firestone, Jr. of The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company chose to build an exclusive vacation resort on a perfectly shaped crescent beach, that they aptly named "Half Moon." That same year Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club officially opened with seventeen whitewashed cottages overlooking Half Moon Bay, and 30 beachfront homes. As it still does, the Resort attracted many luminaries of the day including Joan Crawford, Clark Gable and HRH Princes Margaret. Other notable guests include HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and HRH the Prince of Wales; John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy, Prince Rainer of Monaco and George H. W. Bush. Over the years, Half Moon has undergone several renovations and additions, most recently, the multi-million dollar demolition and rebuilding of its 50-year-old beachfront rooms.
