There is certainly much more to Charleston besides Kiawah Islands five superb courses but it's a hard act to follow when the Ocean course was rated perfect in a 'best places to play' by Golf Digest!!
In fact, the region's two dozen spectacular layouts are designed by some of the world's finest golf-course architects, including Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, Tom Jackson and Gary Player, among others.
However, Kiawah's Ocean Course - which helped place Charleston on the world's golf map after it hosted the dramatic 1991 Ryder Cup matches - is the region's top dog.
Besides the Ocean Course's perfect "Best Places to Play" rating, Digest readers gave three other area courses 4.5 stars - Kiawah's Cougar Point and Turtle Point, and River Towne Country Club - and six area courses 4 stars - Charleston National Country Club, Seabrook Island's Crooked Oaks and Ocean Winds courses, Kiawah's Osprey Point, and Wild Dunes Resort's Links Course and Harbor Course. Osprey Point is also ranked 10th in Golf for Women's 2005 "Top 50 Courses for Women" ranking.Charleston's newest nationally acclaimed golf club is Dunes West. Golf Digest ranked the Arthur Hills design as a "Top 10 New Resort Course," and it's on Golfweek's "America's Best" list.
The town of Charleston is a beautiful, aristocratic colonial port where doll-like, pastel coloured homes peek out at you from lacy, iron gates. Charleston is unquestionably America's most beautiful 'little city' and no visit to the state would be complete without at least a day devoted to admiring the treasures and pleasures. Come wander along the cobblestone streets, smell the sea breezes, explore the shops and boutiques and sample the fresh seafood. Come experience the Charleston area. It is an unforgettable place that will linger in the memory for a lifetime.
