Chiang Mai is located some 700 km. from Bangkok and is the principal city of northern Thailand and capital of the province. The city has had a long and mostly independent history, which has to a large extent preserved a distinctive culture. Chiang Mai has a tradition as a handicraft centre, producing silk, wood, silver, ceramics and more, which has made the city the country's top shopping destination for arts and crafts. The Night Bazaar is one of the most famous in Thailand and offers the bargain hunters a huge array of goods.
The surrounding area offers some of the most picturesque scenery in the whole country and provides a wonderful backdrop for many of the wonderful golf courses in the region.
